This started out as a pencil box after viewing a pencil box posted by USCJeff. I used Canary Wood, my first time using it, and it works very well with hand tools, sawing and planing. I made an small error while planing the sides and was having trouble getting the glue to stick on one joint. So my first try at a pencil box became a box for my Gimlets. It was good practice in box small box making and since I need another one for my Brace Bits, I will have one more try before making the pencil box. This box is very handy at keeping the Gimlets together and not lying around in one of the tool cabinet drawers.

The wood looks great… I love that grain. I’ve never worked with Canary Wood before.

Love the wood. I’ll have to try it one of these days. My lumber budget is not so much though. . . :( Nice post.

The box has come out very nice and the wood looks beautiful. The joinery is superb. Which glue you have used?

the box looks great, I don’t see why it couldn’t still be a pencil box (other than it seems to be doing a fine job with your Gimlets).
I like the saw in the background, is that a dovetail saw? I’d like a nice quality handsaw, that’s still on my “tools to get” list.

MsDebbie, I thought gimlets were that bag of stuff you pull out of the frozen turkey before you cook it. :-)
(Nice little box!)

Thank you all for the kind comments, I should add that I used Tung Oil as the finish, it really makes the grain pop on this project.
Sharad, I used Titebond II, but one of the corners didn’t take so I am going to have to try again using a syringe with more glue.
Jeff, I don’t know what we paid for the board, my wife fell in love with it at the store and wanted it for another quilt hangar (she was quite surprised and none to happy when she saw this post of “her” wood) :0)
Darryl, the saw is a cross cut carcass saw and is a joy to use, you can see my review of my hand saws in the reviews section. I highly recommend the maker (Adria Tools), you won’t be dissapointed.
