My oldest daughter has a boyfriend named Willie. A couple of months ago, he was kind enough to help move my new lathe to the shop in the basement. Actually he carried the whole lathe down while I unbolted the next piece, so I did not put too much effort into moving the 500lb machine into its new home. It only seems fair that he get a turn using the new toy, I mean tool. He is starting law school so a pen seems like a good project. He chose mahogany for the wood and a pkpariot rollerball kit for the mechanism. Here he is buffing out the blanks.
Next came assembly, I usually do this for the kid pen makers in my shop, but since he carried it down, he gets a little bit of slack.
This is the most crucial test, Inspection time from the girlfriend/daughter.
I think the final result passes. He has shown it to his own Mom who is amazed at his new woodworking skills. Now all he needs to do is take notes, write briefs and pass tests.

Thanks Trifern. We’d love to have you over for visit. I’ve got some bowl blanks that we’re going to give a try this week. I could use some of your help/advise on them. Will you be staying for dinner?

Hand turned pens are such a nice thing to see, i own a mini lathe and do a bit of turning but i have never tried my hand at turning a pen, seems a bit a fiddily to me.
Thanks for the pics.
Woody.
