This is a craftsman inspired mantle I built for our home. The basic idea came from a local fireplace retailer, and I just expanded on it a little. I liked the look of the dovetailed box and simple clean elements. I also did a maple inlay in a simple prairie pattern. My wife laid the glass tiles around the firebox. The lumber is walnut from a tree that fell on my grandfathers farm in Iowa in 1953. I put a rope light on the underside and connected it to a touch switch. It works great when we watch movies.

Aaron,
This is a really nice looking mantle. I like the idea of incorporating the maple inlay and rope lighting into the design. They add visual interest to the piece. I have one of these on my to-do list. I promised my wife one several years ago but simply have not gotten around to it yet. And, trust me, I am reminded of it frequently. :)
Thanks for the post. I enjoyed seeing your project and it gives me some ideas.

Aaron, what a well executed and warm highlight for your home. It is a rare treat to have made something from wood that is a reminder of family roots.
