Project Information

A friend gave me some spalted tamarisk that came down in a storm. Messing around with book matching I thought of tie dyed clothes and made some necklaces. I then dyed them to make them more tie dye like. The spalted wood that is dyed is very weak an porous. I have been experimenting with stabilizing the wood with acrylic and acetone, it has been tricky getting good penetration even with a makeshift vacuum chamber (jar and shop vac haha) and after sanding most of it is gone. This and the wood soaks up so much finish it is a hassle too. If you have any tips I would love to hear them.

These are beautiful Sven. I'll be watching for the answer to your question. I've heard of soaking in stabilizer which then takes a long time to dry…

Very creative, like the look of colorful dyed patterns on wood. They are really cool necklaces.
