I bought a damn $8 pen blank from the wood store. Determined not to F it up. I measured and center punched my drill holes, aced it up onto my bushings…turned it really nice, sanded well, twice through several grits, was really happy with the finish after 4 coats buffed to 12000 with MM at the end. Three of CA then 1.5 of spray laquer, buffed out to the 12000, and it was lookin’ nice.

Pressed all the pieces together with precision…....

Noticed that they were boldface liars.

The damn components aren’t the size of the bushing they say it is.

Need digital calipers….

Or user error?
One or the other for sure.

Beautiful.

I agree, when you find a beautiful piece, there is pressure to do it justice.

Very attractive pen, despite your challenges.

I think your center bushing was on backward

I know exactly the kit and the spot you’re referring to, most of the time the bushing is correct but a digital will a good investment. Frustrating :-(

I triple checked the bushings, really I did because I have made that mistake in the past. The cuban set has 4 different sized bushings and its frustrating. Either way, I really did check those and the center coupler of the kit before I pressed.

Im still not ruling out user error, but for some reason these Rockler gold and copper pen sets in this batch seemed off to me. Ill quadruple check next time with calipers.
