Back in May of 2013 I was hired to create a Mash Paddle for HopUnion LLC, based in Yakima, Washington.

This paddle was given as a major prize in the 2013 National Homebrewer Competition. This year’s event took place in Philadelphia, PA, hence the Liberty Bell themed paddle.

The paddle is 44 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide and made from solid, 1 inch thick Walnut.

Carving was done on my CNC router and the emblems in the paddle area were cut using my scroll saw.

As this paddle may actually be used in the making of beer, it is treated in 100% food-grade Mineral Oil.

This is the 2nd year in a row that I have been hired to create such an award for Hop Union LLC. They have also commissioned numerous other paddles for various other reasons.

This paddle wound up almost looking like a bar of chocolate – really pretty!

Very good when your work gets some well earned recognition.
