Fairy Door #8: The Orient

Project by MsDebbieP posted 541 days ago 822 views 0 times favorited 36 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Aug 16, 2008

This might be the last one I post for a while… I’m about out of ideas for new versions.

Wood: walnut (see? I don’t always paint walnut!) and poplar (painted black)
Hinges: Jewelry wire
Door Knob: 1/2 a hair barrette

Process:
1. cut the walnut to length and then cut the top piece off.
2. Cut the walnut wedges off, creating the angles
3. Cut the door to fit and used my new chisels to cut out the “boards”
4. Painted the door black
5. Put two coats of poly on the walnut
6. thought: this is defnitely my favourite door
7. Created the hinges (being careful not to create hinges that could be interpreted in um.. unique ways)
8. Cursed the hinges as i tried to attach them to the door and make them fit in the door frame.
9. Glued the frame/door all together.
10. Cursed the gluing process as everything moved this way and that
11. Thought: this is no longer my favourite door
12. Attached the handle
13. Thought: it’s finally done and it looks ALMOST like I had envisioned
14. Hmm now I’m disappointed with the photos. They appear a little blurry. Darn.

Ok.. next project.

MsDebbie,

You and Rick need to work together to make Fairy “houses”. You make the doors and Rick makes the houses.

Would hummingbirds count as “Fairy Birds”? Their wings are about the same.

How about a Fairy Lowes or Home Depot door?

Nice Job on the door.

Cool, Debbie! Glad to see you kept the lid on the walnut paint can. :-)

Another nice door Debbie. Fairies might try visiting the space station if they had a door to get in. Thanks for sharing.

This is the best one jet.

There are a lot of very nice ideas out there when you google “fairy doors”, but you probably figured that one out already.

yah. Thanks though.
I am working on another one… it’s been on the idea list but I’ve been putting it off. Just a little more complex than the rest.

I like this door too.
The commotion has slowed down with my girls, I think it’s time to stir things up again
I think the fairies that moved into my house need to help their friends move in.

Hi Ms. Debbie;

Very nice design.

Why not start attaching those doors to a foyer?

Like John’s extreme birdhouses.

That would be especially cool in the Asian style of the door above.

Deb, You aspire to new heights, that is beautiful. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything quite so nice from you. Please continue to attain these new frontiers you have strove to add to your repertoire. Very, very nice. You have really raised the level of woodworking.

I had forgotten about that walnut painting fiasco you started it seems a year or so ago. Caused quite a stir. Thought Martin would have to ban you there for a bit. While I always knew there wasn’t something quite right about you, that just adds to the evidence. . . hehehe. Thanks for all you do for the site in all seriousness. You’re appreciated.

I’m worried that with all those fairies flying around your house you might need an exterminator. Do they raise or lower property values? Do they cause much noise? Are they good neighbors? Must be as many as have moved in.

Jeff: I didn’t think ANYONE had forgotten about the paint… lol… the thought of being banned.. gosh that’s scary! :) lol

Last night Rick said he heard this little banging outside. He figured it was fairies knocking at their doors. I guess we are going to get even MORE moving in!
Property value: hmm not sure but I hope it doesn’t raise property taxes.
