Hi folks :)
I haven’t participated in a while. Spring and summer rolled in and it was too hot to be in the workshop, then I ended up spending most of my free time working on my old car through the summer.
I made this for my younger son’s birthday. He is, of course, a fan of Harry Potter, and he really loved the gift.
The wand is made of mahogany. It turned out better than I expected since it was only my second time using a lathe, and the first time was just to turn some simple caps for my workbench vice handle. The mahogany has open pores and even though the result is really smooth in most places, it doesn’t look so on the photos.
The case is made of birch and I wanted to build it in a tube-like form. it was cut on the bandsaw and put back together to appear seamless. The remaining center square was cut into sections then drilled to fit the wand just right. The case really was the tricky part all in all.
The finish on everything is danish oil and paste wax.
