Made this box for the grandson to keep some things in. Top is Butternut, sides are southern yellow Pine, base white pine.
Finished only the outside with Minwax Polycrylic.
For the catch on the top, used a rare earth magnet in the frame , and cut the base of a 9mm steel spent casing for the magnet to grab onto.

Nice box Pete. I am new to woodworking. Did you chisel out the space for the hinges or do it some other way? thanks

GraysonT, thanks, no chiseling, what I added after the pictures, were 2 felt stick on ‘rounds’, on the front corners, normally used on the bottom of lamps etc to keep from scratching. The rounds made up the space/height of the surface mounted hinges so the box top closes with equal spacing all around. Also used them on the box bottom.

Great looking box. Great use of spent shell casing.
