This one is simple, a basic form with a live bottom and edge including the chainsaw markings. Why take out tool marks when they accent the piece? There was no burl at that level, I could have gone down a little further to find it I guess but the size was already pretty small. This seems like it created a nice contrast.

I’m really starting to like these lace maple burls – and I’m eyeballing some Australian versions of burls that I could do something like this with with an assortment of colors. Just need to spend the money and get to make it happen at some point.

Nice work! You inspire me to turn non-standard shapes and forms. Thank you.

Yes the non-standard stuff has been fun, just mind your safety factors! Keep an eye on the balance of the machine, keep your fingers and hands in tight. I’ve busted my knuckles more than a few times already as I get in close and realize that little knobby thing hurts when it smacks into you!

I have a few real exotic projects pending, and we have lots of “ideas” ... which is going to be expensive and a little on the risky side for things flying or breaking free. Eventually I’ll upgrade lathes and get something super duty and heavy. I’d really like an outboard dedicated bowl lathe with a seat in front of it!

OK It’s official – we have kickstarted a campaign on Kickstarter … we need a new lathe and apparently this is a method to get some funding. Read the details, we’re offering a generous rewards system that basically is pre-selling our bowls, vases, and vessels in order to fund the purchase of a new lathe.

Please help us out if you can by sharing this link wherever you can – and of course if you want a bowl please sponsor (back) our campaign! – Thank you!
