This is my first attempt at a segmented turning. OD 15 inch /ID 13& half. Turned on Cole jaws and floating bottom added after turning and finishing.

Farkle board: 48 pieces, 4 rings, 12 segments per ring, and floating base. Woods are sycamore, walnut and purpleheart.

Very nice segmented turning. It is good to have the felt on the bottom to keep it quieter!!

Nice going…...................Jim

Very nice over-sized turning! What kind of finish? Have you found anything that will stand up to the dice hitting the sides?

Thanks for the comments.

The bottom is a floating 1/4 ” plywood disk with (pleather) adhered to it so it did not amplify the sound of the dice being rolled.

I used the floating base to address wood movement of the sides over time. Malcolm Tibbitts has an article laying out the use of the floating base to prevent cracking in large turnings.

The finish is circa 1850 antique gel paste wax buffed on the lathe with 0000 steal wool.

Have your say...
