I’ve been everywhere except in the woodshop for about the last 6-7 months, but now it’s good to be back and send chips and sawdust flyin’ again. No sooner do I get home but I have 4-5 new items on the gift list. I have a 2 year-old grandson who has completely embraced the whole pirate theme (I guess it’s better that than vampires – although wooden stakes are really easy!!). My daughter asked for a “pirate wheel” to put on his wall, pretty sure this is reasonably close to what she had in mind.
This was made out of a single spruce 2×4 about 8’ long; and took about 6-7 hours (not counting drying times for glue, stains, or finishes. My calculations were off on the placement for a couple of spokes, but I think it’ll be enjoyed just the same.
I’m hoping the shine dulls by tomorrow, or I’ll be lightly sanding it down and putting a less glossy finish on it. I just don’t visualize a Ship’s Wheel on a pirate ship as being shiny….
