This is a pair of boxes almost like identical twins except that one has a handle .
The boxes are almost made entirely with the table saw except for sanding and planing the assembled strips made up from the mouldings walnut and OSB.
I did not want external splines on these boxes so I use the tray ledge instead ,I cut a groove in the sides and front and back and glued in the tray ledgers which extend into the sides creating a spline joint and then filled the grooves in the sides .
The hinges are leather strips 5/8”W x1 1/4”L glued in and covered with walnut ,they work great and keep perfect alignment and the walnut blocks act as a lid stop when open ,very simple to and inexpensive .
The boxes do have trays and are lined with linen cloth on poster board ,the finish is lacquer and buffed with bees wax finish .
The size is 9”W x5 1/2” D x 4 1/4” H
The motive came from my birthplace which is a northern area of Germany called the Heide (Heather ) .
The texture in the OSB kind of looks like heather branches and the mouldings are sort of representative of the old farm house ornamentation .
These boxes will go to my two daughters as a reminder of their heritage .
