Remember those jars they used to keep straws in at soda fountains and diners? My wife was looking for one to get for our daughter and had come up empty. There’s plenty of them available with plastic jars — but we wanted one made with glass. So I suggested finding a simple vase of the right size and I’d make the rest of it from wood. Well, we found the vase at Hobby Lobby ($6). After getting it home, I broke in some of my new found skills on the lathe and turned the top from some padauk I had laying around. I turned the center spindle, the bottom bowl and the top knob from black walnut. I also learned a few hard lessons about turning bowls — but, as they say, “the 3rd time’s the charm.” (My first 2 attempts more or less exploded on me while spinning. I’ve now upgraded my safety equipment from just safety glasses to a full face shield and safety glasses.) Finished everything with brush-on clear lacquer.
