Project Information

Anyone who is/knows a Buckeye will be familiar with the O H I O cheer. My daughter is a freshman at OSU this year, so I thought I would cut this O H I O silhouette for her as a keepsake. She loved it and I got a lot of comments from friends as well, so I decided to cut a few more and offer them for sale at a recent Christmas Art show I was in. They were a big hit and I sold all of them at $25 each. My wife is an avid scrapbooker and she helped me out by making the tags.

These are roughly 10"w x 8"h, 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. I stack cut 3 at a time on my scrollsaw, stained black with General Finishes water based black, and morticed into a maple base that has my name branded in the bottom. These were fun to make.

Thanks for looking!

Very cool! Now we will see if they can get into the national championship game, that would help your sales!

That is VERY cool! I don't think I have ever seen this idea before, and on LJ's that is quite a statement!

I am assuming you used a scrollsaw for the figures? Nice cutting!

You can stack cut a bunch of these and really up the profit margins. Make sure there's a way to contact you on the tag you use as others who see these will certainly want one.

Nice build and thanks for sharing this idea!

Hi Bob.. yes I cut these on my scrollsaw 3 and 4 at a time. They didn't take long to cut, I probably spent more time at the router table making up the bases. I included a card with every sale and asked the buyers to send me back an email with how the gift was received. I'm sure they will bring much Christmas joy.

Smart way to get around the branding with no copyright issues, at least as far as I know. Who knows, maybe they can copyright hand gestures?? I wouldn't be surprised! Great work, that is a really unique gift idea. I know they would sell like hotcakes here.

Great idea Mat but I won't be copying you.
It would be hard to make a buck on British Columbia.

As an avid Buckeye fan and also an OSU dad (my daughter is a senior), I absolutely love this. Very well done and I may have to borrow this for a gift for my daughter as well.
