Awhile back my father acquired a lathe from his brother-in-law. We had never attempted any wood turning before. He made him a mallet for his first project and then me one (the light colored one). One trip home last spring I made me one too (the darker one). He has been playing with the lathe ever since. I helped him purchase a bowl chuck. He has been turning bowls ever since.
A couple of weeks ago I went back home and tried my first bowl, more of a cup really. It is 4 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide at the mouth. It is made from a piece of dogwood that died in my Dad’s backyard. It was very tough to work with, especially endgrain. I didn’t get to smooth it as much as I wanted. It has a few glitches in it but I am pleases with my first attempt.
I can’t wait until I get a lathe. That’s the most fun with wood I have ever had.
-- Bill from Lithia Springs, GA I love the smell of sawdust in the morning.

I don’t know anything about lathes, actually they kind of intimidate me. That being said, if this were my first turned bowl I would be quite proud of it. Nice work. Hope you get your own lathe soon. bbqKing

Sounds like the lathe got another one! You will soon be looking at all kinds of wood and thinking of what you can turn out of it.

Great job on your first bowl, especially considering it was end grain. I hope you get a lathe soon. They are a BLAST. Thanks for sharing Bill.

Looks good – be warned lathes and wood turning are very addictive :P
But most of all – sign your weekly pay check over to your favorite seller of wood turning tools – I worked out I have spent over $8000 on lathes, tools, chucks, etc.
-- The wood slayer - Yes dear I did plan to make more kindling out of that wood I have been drying for the last year - honest!
Have your say...
