Great attempt.
I think your real reason is to practice cutting DT. Be it by hand or using router & DT jig there is satisfaction of achivement…from diffrent perspectives and levels.

Try putting that face on a sander for a while – they’ll look a lot better once you make them flush. Its all part of the learning process.

Hey there, My first try on my leigh jig yielded a three sided box that did not really fit together. The jig can cut perfect dovetails so keep trying and be patient (buy lots of cheap scrap to practice on). Your boxes made me look at them, so you must be doing something right. Use these for storage around the shop and you can look at them later and see your skills increase.

Not bad…not bad at all! You can fill in those small gaps with sawdust mixed with yellow glue, let dry, scrape away the excess glue, and sand them flush. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Please post more as you progress towards mastery. A most worthy endeavor.

Not bad, jigs take some getting used to. Don’t give up entirely on machine cut DTs. They have their place too. Practice some more and I bet you can double the visual pleasure.

Since you are learning, what you have done is quite good. Perfection will come with practice. Try the sawdust solution and use the box with pride.

Practice is a great idea, but you may want to figure out why you don’t like the DT you see here and figure out how they could be better. There are all kinds of postings/magazine articles/videos on how to cut DTs (a lot of really great info on this site and sites LJs have posted here). Read some of these and figure out how to make both the jig cut and hand cut ones better. My first hand cut dovetails were scary ugly (no I don’t have pictures :-) but I am working on getting better. I found pallets are cheap source of wood to practice on and sometime have really great wood to work with and they are cheap and plentiful (HD here leaves the discards in the parking lot for us scroungers to pick up). So go ahead practice, correct and practice some more!
