Lat week a lady called me to see if I could refinish this antique bear for her. The third picture shows how the bear looked when I got it. She also wanted me to make a table that sat on the unbrella holder. So I took on the project. I know the bear is missing a hat rack to bad she does not have it because it would make the bear worth more. Because it is an antique I did not want to fasten the table with any screws so I made brackets to hold the table on the bear. I still can’t find this bear on line she said it is made by a man from Russia it was here moms and has been in her family for a long time. She seen one on the Road Show that was worth $25,000.00. The flower like carving on the chest hair is what sets this piece off. I guess it is something the carver always does. If anyone can help me get more information on this bear please let me know.
P.S she picked this piece of wood from my shop for the table.
Thanks Dennis

Google Images : Antique Hand Carved Bear Umbrella Stand, Bern Bears, Swiss Bears, Black Forest Bears has 50-100 images similar to your photos, but I only found one with the flower-like pattern on the chest.

You may not want to refinish this if it is indeed a rare piece!!!!

I have heard of pieces that would have been 25,000 dollars go down to a few hundred – just because somebody restained or “fixed” something.

Get in contact with someone who knows this stuff and ask a LOT of questions before you do anything other than clean it well.

Cool looking bear, btw!

Very Nice Work On The Table Indeed! Thanks For Posting!

I Totally agree with NOT Refinishing it! For the Reasons explained by Bob!

I “Diddled” around with Your Picture To Better Compare It With The One From “Christies”

Man I should have looked at this earlier! I am sitting at the airport in Krasnodar Russia waiting to board my plane. I am sure that someone here could have told me. Good luck and beautiful work Dennis.

Laura and I want to thank everyone that looked and for the help on finding this Bear what I did with it was just recondition the Bear with Watco Danish oil Natural and stained the bad spot not to harm the original finish. The Danish oil helps to seal and condition the wood for years to come.
Thanks agian Dennis
