Simple live edge shelf for my office

This was an impromptu project since my neighbor offered me a section of the slice of his tree that fell last season. I never worked with such a thick piece and live edge so I decided to make a simple shelf for my home office. Also, this is the first time I used a large torch to create the finish in the wood. In the past poplar never looked that great by staining it. Always seemed to appear boring and flat. But torching poplar yielded the best looking grain pattern yet! I hope you all like it and I have a new found liking of poplar now :)

The torched grain really looks nice, It gives the slab a nice depth to it. I may have to try that myself. The shelf looks great!

That is pretty crazy how cool it looks after torching it! Didn’t know that was possible, very cool.

Wonderful result. Just goes to show what can be done with a “Dull and Boring” piece of wood.
Congratulations and thank you for showing.

Thanks everyone! Definitely post your projects and link me to it if you use any torching to finish it. I’m interested in other people’s results using different methods and types of wood.

Very nice looking shelf that is the first time I heard of torching wood as a finish I will have to research it a little more.

Simple project but it looks really great in your office. Like the torching technique and the finish sets it off. Great job!
