Young Callum’s LumberJock’s Dibber project inspired me to post one of my first projects. This is my first turning project from years ago. I turned it on my first lathe… a metal lathe. I used my Dremel tool to carve the fluting around the top. I found this “plan” in a book called “What-cha-ma-callits”. This book is the companion book to a book called “Thing-a-ma-jigs”. These are books of plans & descriptions of “18th Century Necessities and Niceties”. My photos of the Spurtle include a recipe on how to make Porridge & a little history.

Dohhh! Now I know why my gruel always comes out bad. I’ve been stirring it counter clockwise all these years.
Thanks for setting me straight.

Hi Frank;
Nice turning.
Scott;
You think that’s bad, I’ve been using a crooked stick!
Interesting post!

That’s OK Scott!!! I believe that it’s proper to stir YOUR gruel anti-clockwise because you live on the “LEFT COAST”!!!! As far as the crooked stick that Lee is using… He’s on his own!
Several of the projects I’ve posted on LumberJocks were taken from these two books.

That is a nice spurtle (theevil). Have you ever used it for its intended purpose?

This spurtle has never been used but I have had soups & stews that were stirred with spurtles at several re-enactments that I’ve been to. The problem with a spurtle is that it’s hard to get a taste of what’s cookin’ from a spurtle. I prefer a wooden spoon. (That’s what I use to sneak a taste of spagetti sauce from the pot while my wife’s cooking.)

Hello,
Nice looking spurtle! The extra carving you around the top really enhanced the look of this classic treen ware. Take care and all the best to you and yours!

great job!
I think Scott posted a spurtle a while back. I had to look it up. I didn’t know there were so many rules about oatmeal. You don’t stir it around with a spoon.. no no no.. just swirl it gently with your spurtle, and of course use the correct direction in your stirring.
I made it once last year for my daughter using the correct method … she couldn’t tell the difference :)

My problem is that I use a spoon while ANYBODY is cooking… When I stir the pot the spoon always comes out with food on it… and it can’t go to waste. That’s why I’m on a diet now. I should use the spurtle.

Aw..the new spurtle diet fad. Ice Cream, Steaks, Mashed Taters, Mac & Cheese…eat all you want. Just use a spurtle.

Very interesting turning job with history attached to it. You have done the turning very decoratively. Now try to make a wooden spoon so that u can taste the food as well.
