New Totes & Knobs

Last year I purchased a set of Bill Rittner’s (Hardware City Tools) tote/knob for my Veritas plane and realized how great they felt. After following Bill’s blog which included his description of the build I decided to give it a try. I never have liked the feel of my Lie Nielson #8 so I changed to a low style knob and new tote (both in walnut). I was really happy with the results so I built another set for my #4 which had a cracked tote. I like Bill’s approach with a little thicker tote and an elliptical profile.

Nice work on those planes. Now they will be a great addition to your shop.

Very nice job on crafting the tote and knob. I think that you’ll find that having configured the tool the way you want, that you enjoy using it more frequently.

I have a cherry set of Bill Ritner’s tote/knob on my #7. And like yourself, I love the elliptical, thicker shape. It’s very comfortable in the hand.
