Picture maple

Found this piece of maple at Wible Lumber, a local hardwood supplier earlier this summer. This is one of those boards that a picture will never do justice. My best guess is that it is part of a burl, but in all honesty I have no idea what could cause something like this.
It took a lot of stabilization before I could cut into it, the last picture will show why. I went through at least 2 ounces of thick CA to get the gaps filled.

The top is a piece of crotch wood cherry, shaped just a bit, and wood dowel hinges. The little finger lift is purple heart, and it is lined with upholstery leather. Overall size 8×10 x 4, and is finished with wipe on poly, and buffed with McGuires auto buff.

That is amazing! Really like how you offset the lid lift. Way kool, all the way around.

That looks like a burl with bark inclusions.
You did a great job making use of it and combining it with the crotch cherry lid.
Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
Bravo!!!
