When Coast Guard members retire they evidently retire their hat and put it in a trophy case. For a veteran that will be retiring soon I was asked by his family to make him a hat box trophy case that would look like the hanger where this member of the CG last worked.

Needless to say this is an original design because there are no plans for a hanger styled hat box. To get to this point I first had to make a model using poster board. That way I knew the rough shape and dimensions to fit the hat. Next was looking through a bunch of photographs of the hanger to get more details and then a trip to the hanger via Google Earth where I derived the general dimensions of the building and scaled them down to my poster board model. Finally I was able to start cutting wood but even that was filled with a lot of trial and error as I had to add special re-enforcements to the mitered corners (corner keys would not have looked right) and needed to make the box where you could put the hat inside during the retirement ceremony, note the hat is actually bigger than the glass door so I made it where you could take the roof off (unlike the real hanger).

I have it taped together this evening because I will be finishing it in the morning and its a lot easier to finish the inside when you can take it apart. I’ll post more pictures when it is done but I wanted to get this posted today because this is a Veteran’s day type project.
