This is my first turned bowl, or bowl of any sort. It is turned from a few planks of walnut glued together. I learnt a few things a long the way and realized how much there is about turning that I still have to learn. I’m sure I’ll have a few new questions in the forums in the coming days. Thanks for looking, and comments or critiques are welcome.

Nicely nicely. Nothing makes me appreciate a simple bowl quite so much as having gotten a lathe ;)

What’s the finish?

Cool for your first turning. I’m still finding pieces from my first one.

It only gets better and even after 30+ years I still find a challenge in turning.

Chances are your tool is not sharp and your technique will get better with some instruction and practice. Hang on to your first one so you can look back to when you started. That is a challenging shape. A somewhat shallower bowl with a more flowing shape is easier to turn. Some folks think straight sides are not as attractive as a fair curve, but it is what you like (or your wife) that counts.

It looks good, like the beautiful walnut and shape. You’re off to a good start.

Have your say...
