This is my first turned box. It is made from Crab Apple with Black Walnut “stem.” 2 years ago we had a couple of tornados come through Western Massachusetts, which is a very rare occurence. My friend and co-worker was fortunate that his house was spared but he pretty much lost every tree on his property. One of the trees damaged was a Crab Apple that his father had planted in memory of his mother (my friend’s grandmother) which started to bloom every year right on her birthday. Needless to say it was a very special tree for my friend. Some co-workers and myself spent some time helping my friend clean up after the storm and I took a few pieces of Mountain Ash and the trunk of the Crab Apple hoping 1 day I could make something out if for him. After a couple years of drying in my shed I decied to try my hand at turning a lidded box and suprise him with it. The box measures about 4 inches by 2 inches at the widest points and has been finished with Mineral Oil and Paste Wax.

Thanks for looking

Very nice turning Rafe. The walnut stem is fitting. I have a lot of crab apple logs from a friend since August. I will have to wait patiently as they dry.

It’s beautiful, like the shape and the pretty grains. Looks perfect with the walnut. I’m sure your friend appreciates it. Great job!

It’s a beautifully turned box and that wood is wonderful.
