King Bed with Lots of Storage

This was my spring and summer project this year. King size bed of red oak. Total of eight drawers each almost two feet deep, along with an access panel on the foot end of the bed for access to the space between the drawer frames.

Under the headboard drawer is an access hole to a power strip for the various clocks, lights and chargers.

The actual bed was built in four pieces. Left and right drawer frames, foot board, and the mattress platform which is 3/4 inch plywood which sits inside the oak boards that top the other three pieces.

Finish in Sherwin-Williams Fruitwood stain topped with S-W waterborne polyurethane.

Very good work.
Did you have plans from somewhere or design as you went?

My wife is wanting almost this exact design, but queen size.
Do you have photos of the interior construction?

Thanks,
Delain

Delain, I designed this myself. I did a rough sketchup drawing, then worked out the details as I went. Afraid I didn’t take any pictures of the construction either. But, here is a picture of the sketchup drawing. Some of the specific dimensions are not correct in this, since as I said I designed as I went. The oak runners for the drawers are not drawn out either, but this should give you a rough starting point.

The dividers that run head to toe have oak runners that sit on the floor which are rounded and sanded smooth so the bed can slide easily across the carpet, while the cross dividers are elevated off the floor. The 3/4 inch plywood platform has a framework that sits on these dividers. Not shown are boards that run along the center of the top of the drawer spaces to prevent the drawers from dropping when the slide out, and the top of this runner also supports the platform. Additional framework stretches across the center to support that part of the mattress platform.

Everybody else, thanks for the nice comments.

Very nice. This is pretty much exactly what I need to build.

Have your say...
