Walnut and Mahogany Winding Sticks

I needed some winding sticks to check for board twist in an upcoming project.

I used the last cutoff of walnut I had on hand and a strip of Mahogany from a previous project.

The hardest part was getting the 2 pieces absolutely true, square, parallel and equal in height. This is a definite skill builder for hand tool users.

Lots of patience and practice with planes on this one.

Finish is merely BLO

Nice Terry! Which one is used in the foreground? Sweet horse by the way.

Very nice, Terry. You’re so right on making them square, true, parallel and equal with hand planes. Not as easy as it sounds, but then perfect is what they’re trying to be. Well done.

Those are awesome, and I need to make a pair. I want to know about that mini bench you’re working on. Looks awesome!

Thanks for the compliments.

The one with the Mahogany strip on top is the background. this provides the contrast against the darker foreground.

For the center mark I just made a notch on the bottom of each.

These are also tapered toward the top so they don’t get placed upside down.

No blog on the saw bench, but I posted its progress on the Work bench smack down thread . I may go back and write up a blog on it.

Nice work on the sticks Terry. Have you used them yet to flatten the saw bench? I watched your progress on it on the other thread. Both are very cool!

Not yet! The saw bench while usable and certainly not fine furniture does need truing.
