Hi Folks

This captivatiing box is a collaboration with Bethan Englefield and the design was inspired by the Giants Causeway. The Thulean Plateau was a great basaltic lava plain that existed during the Paleogene Period. This plateau was broken up during the formation of the Atlantic Ocean leaving remnants existing in Northern Ireland – It is the origin of the Giant’s Causeway. Bethan not only designed the marquetry but cut and assembled it with her own hands. It was then passed to me as thin sheets of veneers called overlays or layons and I brought it to life as the Thulean. The Causeway theme continues inside with a rich lava coloured suede and lamb nappa. The Thulean is fitted with the Neat team hardware and finished with a satin finish.

Cheers

Ian

Tasteful and intelligent interpretation. Beautiful box, excellently executed. I like the allusion to the lava that created the Causeway by the use of an orange interior. Its appearance (orange that is) on the outside conveys a feeling of a living object.

Ian,
Always a delight to see your latest piece. The ever-perfect joinery, the fine finish, the integration of message and material. The tray is lovely, and the neat hardware shines in it’s function. Lovely work.

This is a real beauty. The outside is very fun, and elegant at the same time, and the brite orange inner really makes it pop when it’s opened.

VERY nice! Your joinery is almost invisible. The interior design is a perfect complement to a beautiful box.
