My son’s name is Avi (pronounced ah-vee, which is Hebrew for “my father”). For his third birthday, I made him a full on airplane room. I built a bi-plane shelf and the wooden sign seen in this post (will post the bi-plane shelf later).
For Avi’s first birthday, my friend made him a small wooden bi-plane for his room. My friend and her husband are both graphic designers who have spent plenty of time in marketing, so when it came time to name the plane they came up with a very clever one: The AVIator. Here is the plane she made for him:
We hung up his AVIator plane, and my friend sent this awesome propeller clock.
I decided to make this sign to wrap up the AVIator theme. The frame was built from hemlock scraps I picked from my carpenter friend (he calls whenever they finish a house and have a lot of scraps I can come and get). The stain color name is called “Grizzly” but I don’t know the brand. I also inherited that from my carpenter friend. I finished it with a homemade batch of beeswax and mineral oil. The letters are made of MDF. I cut them out using a jigsaw and glued and screwed them to the 1/4” plywood backing. The paint on those is a mix of various acrylic craft paints I had around the house. I just mixed colors until I found one that complimented the grizzly stain. There are large D-hook hangers installed on the back of the frame.
I love how it turned out.
