Walnut box/maple lid

My mother-in-law turned 77 this week, and my wife suggested a small box. (Mary loves any little box with a lid.) We went looking for a nice blank and found this little 2×4x4 figured walnut block. Not tall enough to make a lid from the same piece (plus, there was some checking to deal with), so I took a piece of the curly maple I’ve been having such fun with lately (see the previous project) and turned a simple lid.

The contrast of the two woods was a bit much, so we added the walnut button to the top. Sanded to 600#, then wiped with Danish oil and buffed on the wheel. I hope she likes it!

I’m absolutely certain she will. That is simply beautiful. Very finely done, and I love the wonderful finish.

Excellent box. The woods contrast perfectly and the grain in both is really nice. She should really love it.

It’s a beauty! Gorgeous walnut that goes perfectly with the maple. Beautiful shape and awesome finish. Excellent turning piece!
