This project generated out of a crooked chess board – bottom line is that I screwed up. The table saw fence was knocked about 3 degrees out and I didn’t notice. The net result was I sliced up swiss pear and leopard wood to the tune of a $100 easy in wood and it was crooked. Damn it … I glued it up anyway and made a drunken chess board … which is hard to see in a photograph (not the one on the cedar slab) ... but it’s enough make you a little queezey looking at it in real life. Especially if you’re feeling that annoying OCD nagging from being the idiot that cut the thing crooked to start.
So – solution? – My father (Stan) whittled up a drunken chess set w/ Capt Morgan type figures, beer mugs with faces, drunk fryers, and other such characters. This was a just for fun project that gave us a whimsical chess set to use to display our otherwise very formal boards.
Whittled in basswood and poplar – acrylic paints.
