My second son wanted a pen for school this year, and decided he wanted two different woods along with a metal inlay. Here’s shome shots of them on the lathe and a final to give an idea of how they contrasted. Not one of my better concoctions, but still pleasing to look at.

Interesting! What type of inlay do you use? Do you use the same HHS tools to carve the metal?

a piece of sheet copper from the local hobby store. since it’s soft enough I could use the same gouges. I saw the concept a couple of years ago in Fine Woodworking, and have done it a few times.

Nice work, what type of pen is that?

IIRC olive and Bocote, with a copper sandwich. Just pulled out some unlabeled stock for him to choose from. The kit is one of the screw top kits from woodcraft.

Beautiful pen! Attractive wood combo and the copper inlay is a great accent. I’m sure your son loves it. Great job!
