Last week, I had a customer ask for an alarm clock. I decided to put together a pagoda style clock from a spectacular piece of 4/4 spalted cherry and 3/8 padauk I had in the shop.
The finished clock is about 7” tall, 3” deep, and 5” wide. The vertical stiles have a 3/8” slot cut to hold the padauk panel where a 2” clock fit-up is placed in a 1 13/16” hole.
After the piece was glued up and sanded, it was finished with two coats of 3 lb shellac. When the last coat was cured, the whole piece was waxed with an orange beeswax coat.

hello , and welcome to LJs….which part of the Cherry is “spalted” ? I see what appears to be normal sap pockets / veins in the Cherry pictured here . Maybe some different angle shots would show the “spalting” more clearly . You caught my attention with the title because I have never seen spalted Cherry before . You said it was an alarm clock . Does the clock go all the way through the Padauk and have the alarm controls on the back side of it ? Thank you for postng your project : )

Thanks for the comments Dusty,
The wood is from a diseased cherry tree, and there is some major spalting (I’ve also heard it called mouldering) on the top. I apologize for not having any more pictures, as the customer picked it up very early, and this is the only one I had a chance to snap before he went happily on his way.
The alarm clock is in a forstnered hole through to the other side so the controls are easily accessible.
This was my first alarm clock I have built, and I’m pretty pleased with the outcome.
As far as spalted Cherry, I had never heard of it before, but that is what it was sold to me as…
