Well…what a difference a year makes…last year I was so excited to make my first ever adirondack…at that point I had made fences , gates, picnic tables—-everything with large dimensional lumber…so finally I decided I would make some adirondack chairs—-but why stop at two…when making 3 or four would only be a little harder…since I could use the same pattern…
So I went out and bought the wood for four chairs…cut out two and made one…(AS MS. DEBBIE pointed out so eloquently at the time)...well…I am glad that #2 comes a year later…with more experience and the summer time on my side I have been slowly putting #2 together…while I worked on other projects…
But for this chair I really wanted to go through all the grits carefully…measure everything out well…and then I would plug the holes at the end—-something I had never done…
In the end…its much nice…I still need to finish it…I wasnt sure if i would re-sand the first chair and finish it…but now I really like the contrast in my two chairs because it shows my journey as a student of wood working…
In pictures 2 and 3 you can see both chairs together—-ON MY BRAND NEW DECK…lol…
The chairs are redwood with pine plugs…I wasnt sure about pine…but i realized that its not the entire chair…and I will put some clear finish on it…but I really like the contrast in the two woods…
Oh ya—-I made modifications to the back slats…in the first chair they were not long enough…so I made them much longer and did not keep the same “drop” or slope in the 4th to 5th slats…they are more even in the lengths…
Ok…thanks for looking…since I have hit AUGUST…production is about to slooooow down…but its been a pretty fun summer for this teacher…

haha!!!
I had to go back to see what my inspiring words were—- my goodness I was brilliant :) haha
And now you can look at those two chairs with pride—not only for their individual beauty (a job well done) but also because it is a visual reminder of you progress, of the skills you have developed, and of your personal growth (maybe more patient and able to focus on the smaller details???)
Congratulations. I love your chairs.

Nice Adirondacks, Matt. The wife just asked me last night to make her a couple.

It is a great feeling to finish projects and you’ve got your deck and the new chair to rightfully boast about and claim! Well done. I like the longer back and the more uniform lengths, looks very good.

Beautiful Chairs – Thought I’d send you a link to look at. http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=2&p=47230&cat=3,41306,41316&ap=1
You mentioned you wern’t sure on the plugs at first – this is another option, Brass “countersunk washers” with screws. I’ve never seen them anywhere but Lee Valley – I use them on my Adirondacks and was pleased with the look, thought you might be interested. Thanks for sharing your chair project – be ready to build more once people start seeing these! ;)

thanks everyone…one regret is not making a pattern to make it easier to do more in the future…but I am not set on this exact design which comes from Fine woodworking magazine…
Scrhoeder…those look really cool—-do you have any close-up photos on your chairs…I will look…
Bill…so true…the table is next

Bill – I just posted a few chairs as a project – you can see the detail on the screws pretty good there.
