Repairing an Interesting Handmade Box

Project by dan mosheim posted 484 days ago 444 views 0 times favorited 7 comments Add to Favorites Watch

A friend/client asked me to repair this box recently. We speculated it was most likely English, mid to late 19th century. While I was repairing it though, some clues were presented that led us to believe that that might not be the case. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has seen anything similar to it and may know of that piece’s origin, or who might just have a gut reaction as to where they think this box might have been made. It would probably be best to comment before looking at my blog where your answer will be prejudiced by the photos I’ve posted. Anyway, it was an interesting restoration project. while this is not something I would take on (I wouldn’t want to screw it up!), I can’t wait to see you complete the restoration.

Hi Darryl … The box is as ‘restored’ as it’s going to get. The first and third pictures are the completed project. The one in the middle was taken during the restoration process. Thanks for your comment … dan

Darryl – an interesting challenge and they went to the right person to meet it. I did peek at your blog and was glad I did – what a neat surprise that must have been.

Dan, my gut reaction was late 19th century India. Then I went to your other site and saw the clue you referred to. I’m not sure it proves anything, though.

This is a great box, and a great job of restoring it while maintaining the integrity of the original piece.

Maybe someplace like Morroco, or some Islamic country??? Exported for the US market. Some companies here bought jewelry, snuff, tea boxes and then added hardware or the like. They bought German Porcelin and added their own clocks. Either Indian, Islamic maybe?

You have a fine collection of work . It’s origin could be from a number of places but some how I get a masonic feel to some of it’s design.
