Golden Eye Duck in Flight

Project by Dick, & Barb Cain posted 974 days ago 312 views 0 times favorited 13 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I was looking through my image files today, & found this one.

As you can see this was carved in 1982. This was my first attempt at carving a Duck in flight.
If you look at it closely, you’ll see an error I made, & didn’t discover it until I was halfway done. Rather than tossing it, I finished it anyway.

I couldn’t see all that work go to waste.

The error was the overlap of the wing feathers. They’re the wrong way, this poor Duck could never fly.

You can compare the carving to the pattern picture that the overlap is incorrect.

The carving looks good as long as you don’t get too picky. Or as they say, it looks good from the road.

The material is Cypress barn board, with no finish. the size: 8” x 14 1/2”

Now how can you be sure he couldn’t fly? :-) My dad is a decoy carver. I think I’ll send him this without the story and see if he spots it.

I see no error, I’m an artist and I don’t see it so I bet few people will either. It looks pretty good to me.

Error? Short of digging out a book on birds, I’ll have to take your word for it.

I just added the picture I used as the Pattern, for comparison.

If it looks like a Duck, I guess that’s the main thing.
