First Woodworking Project: Dog Pen

This was my very first woodworking project ~2 years ago and still stands as one of my largest. This project got me hooked on the hobby and I’ll start posting some of my more recent works too.

I wanted to replace a jury-rigged pen made of plastic doggy gates with wood dowels and chicken wire as roof. When I first started putting the design together I thought: “maybe 2 weekends at the most”. Heh ;-)

I designed this project with a lot of margin for error and it was a good thing. The roof was built around the pen and is removable and the fluted trim does a good job of hiding the 30% of the dowels that weren’t quite long enough. In the end I was very happy with it and it looks great in our living room.

This project also turned into my first repair project as it lasted ~ 2 weeks before my little man figured out he could chew through the dowels:

I drilled in from the bottom, replaced and re-stained the dowels, and then ringed the inside of the pen with plexi-glass.

Hope you like it.

Dang fine start Jesse…. nice work. The dogs seem to like it as well.

Howdy Jesse,

Wow – that’s an impressive bit of work. It was a really ambitious first project as well. I bet you learned a ton of lessons from that build.

By the Way – Welcome to LumberJocks! I’m curious about your handle Descolada. Portuguese or Orson Scott Card?

-- Thanks for all the lessons!

Thanks guys, it was one of those projects where I’m not sure I would have started if I knew how long it would take, but I’m very glad I did. I definitely learned a lot and could probably do it in half the time now. One thing that I would change is I would buy an hplv rather than hand staining and sealing 4+ coats on thing (in particular on each dowel) with small cotton applicator.

And Mark, I don’t speak Portuguese so it’s definitely OSC (few people catch that these days). I’ve used that handle a long time now.

I imagine your going to have to use that pen in the near future to hold your pooch while you see a movie adaptation of the #1 Sci-Fi books ever.

Anyhow, good to see another fan and I can’t wait to see your next projects.

I can’t resist. Maybe you can call it a Piggy Pen instead of a dog pen. Yeah I know, that one even hurt me. ;)
