My older brother (yes, another project for another brother!) saw a picture of a similar piece and challenged me to recreate it.
It was surprisingly simple to make. I used the Vaseline distressing method (sporadically swiping Vaseline on the naked boards, painting, then wiping when dry) to get the chippy look. I stenciled in the stars, then scrubbed, sanded, and then beat the poor flag with an old, heavy chain. After it was nice and rough, I rolled on Minwax stain in Walnut with a foam roller, concentrating on the areas where the wood was showing through. The end result is a beautiful and natural looking wear!
As usual, plain pine here. 1×3s glued together and secured in back with additional boards, and I made a French cleat for him to use when he hangs it.
