Wenge Splined Box

Material: Hard maple, wenge, lambskin
Finish: Hand rubbed oil

This is the last project I made using wenge. I began to notice that time I made something with wenge I got some sort of infection. Splinters festered within days or I came down with bronchitis. I then learned that wenge is one of the more toxic woods to work with. As beautiful as it is, the risk of a minor infection turning into something more serious was to great. I do have one large board left that I admire every now now and then though.

Jack, wenge is bad stuff. Get rid of the last board before you are tempted. Your reactions will only get worse…and they can get worse.

As to the box, great craftsmanship. I like the angled splines…it is a nice touch. The woods and finish are beautiful. You might consider a lift for the lid. Looks like there is a lot of cabinet maker in you. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Very nicely done. You make me realize that I need to make more boxes … but perhaps without the wenge.

Lovely and well crafted box! Like the clean lines and the splines look great. Great job!
