These are my version of the Wood Whisperer's pencil holders. As he suggest, these can be made from scraps and they will make great gifts.
The maple and walnut one in the middle was the first one that I made. The dark knot really gives it some interest. It was truly made from scrap, as I had cut this part of the board out from another project where I wanted to stay away from that knot. For this project, I resawed it on the bandsaw to get a bookend set to pair together.
The oak, purpleheart, walnut and maple one has four stars around it. The stars were put together from some leftovers from my tumbling block cutting board. This was also the first pattern inlay that I had done. Some of them are better than others as I improved as I got practice at it.
Finally the single star of walnut and maple on an oak background is my favorite and is a pattern that I think I will try again. I think these will be very popular gifts.
