This is a project that I find on Woodworking for Mere Mortals - Steve Ramsey's site. It inspired me to give it a try. Although the dimensions of his box was an accident, I thought it would make a really nice box for some of my wife’s custom made necklaces. I figure this would make a very nice Christmas gift for someone. This one is made from purpleheart.
I did run into a couple issues. The first base I made broke into pieces when I tried to router the groves for the lid. I decided not not follow Steve’s exact process on the second one and instead routered the groves and then drilled and cut out the remaining stock. I also had a tough time with the lid on the router and instead used the table saw to cut the angles. The first one I cut the center on the scroll saw, but the second, I followed Steve’s alternate advice and did it on the band saw. I think that is the better way to go, but I got a little aggressive sanding the joint where I glued the pieces back together, on inside lip, as seen in the picture. Overall, I am happy with it, and will probably make another now that I know what to avoid.
