I made this beam compass while in the middle of another project and discovered the little metal compass I had wasn’t going to be big enough for my needs. This one is made out of some scrap red oak i had and is 2’ long… that should be large enough.

The locking mechanism works great on the pencil, but it’s not quite tight enough on the center point. I’m playing with a few ideas to replace the current setup, so any suggestions are always appreciated!

DBuonomano would the center piece be more secure if the set screw was on top?

Excellent tool. You could make the locking mechanism like you would on a marking gauge.

Thanks for the feedback! After posting this I went back into the shop last night and had a successful test with a 1/4” bolt and t-nut on the top of a new locking mechanism. It works great, but it’s a little large for the setup. I’m going to try to track down a smaller set screw like the one’s used in a marking gauge (thanks CFrye and Don W). For now, it works great!
