Unusual Birdcage Stand – Re-Purpose with a Purpose

OK – it happened again – only this was about a year ago. My wife brought home this round birdcage. The cage was pretty interesting, but someone had built a table-top stand made out of pine and particle board – and they painted the stand dark green – plus the base was warped. When I pointed this out to my ever loving spouse, she said in her typically perky voice, “That’s OK. You can fix it!” She also had the idea that we ought to incorporate an old ashtray stand we had that her grandfather had built years ago while he was in high school shop. (By my reckoning, that was probably around 1915.)

I had some leftover Makore from another project and fashioned the curved stand and round base under it. Nothing fancy, just some cuts on the band saw and a bit of trimming with the router. But the ashtray stand was all walnut—and, except for some minor bumps & dings, it was in pretty good shape. After stripping the old finish off it, and repairing the few dings, the ashtray stand became a birdcage stand – or maybe it’s a birdcage stand for a birdcage stand. Hmmm…

Whatever you want to call it, it definitely looks good, but if she decides to put a bird in it, where do you put
the cage bottom liner? Thank you for sharing.

It is a very interesting piece. It reminds me of a globe and stand. Very cool combination!

Great re-purpose! Dark and light suits the globe stand theme. Nice job.

Interesting build and it looks really wonderful. It’s a great accent to the house, a conversation piece.
