Chess Board with Piece Storage

The top and accents are walnut and maple (which is not terribly original, but I do like the look). The cabinet is oak. Above each of the drawers, there is a brass strip. The only purpose of these is an accent, so that the knobs would not be the only brass in the project (which would have made my OCD misfire). This project was a lot of fun: I had no clear idea of where I was heading, other than the basic board itself.

I did want a specific side for the “white” player and the “black” player, and so the opposing wood on the frame. Beneath each frame is a thin trim piece of the opposite wood, to add further interest (perhaps).

The project is finished with Tung oil only. The drawers are lined with adhesive felt, but I think I am going to invest in a flocking gun for the next box project, whatever and whenever that will be.

Thank you for looking.

Outstanding! That took time, patience, and skill. Chess is a lot like woodworking. One move and you are in a lot of trouble!
