Walnut Presentation Box. This was a fun project….Somehow, a guy found me on the internet and asked if I could build a presentation box. A group of guys wanted to present one of their hunting group with a special gift….a Beretta 9mm handgun. We only communicated via email, but I sent sketches and photos to the client. He requested that I do some sort of Canadian Goose carving on the lid; a symbol of the hunting they do, and he sent me the brass tag.
I made a walnut box, designed around the size and shape of the handgun and lined with a foam cavity to keep the gun in place. The velvet drape covers the gun in the cavity. The box measures approx. 8×10 inches and has 105 degree stop hinges for the lid. The lid construction features half-lap corners, pinned with walnut dowels. The box corners are a hybrid lap joint, also pinned with walnut dowels. Every thing is finished with hand-rubbed satin poly.

John,
Looks good. I really like the lid detail. The pegs make a nice detail here. Sounds like you’ll have a happy customer.

Very nicely done—like the pegged jointery.

Fine box John. Perfect resting place for its contents. I’ve always liked walnut and the carving is a nice touch.

Very well done John
The design and walnut is the perfect compliment to the gun.
The Canada goose is a nice touch and the lap joint and dowel construction giving the box the perfect look and feel .
