Kitchen Island

Project by roman posted 481 days ago 897 views 2 times favorited 13 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Made this island. cabinet carcases are veneer core maple plywood. The cabinet frames are maple with 5/16 beading which had to mitered, mortise and tenon….........not applied. Doors are solid maple with a 3/8 maple veneered panel. Drawers are solid maple sides and backs , hand cut dovetails and are on the Blum motion guides. Four turnings, one at each corner and the exposed back is divided into three sections similar to the doors ends but have columns which stick out between each section…..........then 5” high solid maple baseboard is applied when installed…..done in a shaker profile.

The other cabinets are the same but done in poplar which will be painted and glazed, distressed.

I might add….........those solid pewter non adjustable butt hinges are a real PITA.

As always, a pro job .
Why the but hinges”? Isn’t there anything out there that looks like them but installs easier?

Roman – that’s a big job nicely executed. I don’t see hinges on the panel left of the sink – is it a pull-out?

Hi Bob

I said the same thing to the client because there is a “butt” hinge that has an adjustment on one leaf to move the door in and out and another on the other leaf to adjust up and down…....then once installed youput in the locking screws but they are not available in solid pewter….......and the client is always right?

The other thing I suggested but to no avail, is to decrease the over all hieght from 35 1/4” to 34 1/2” because this allows for a plywood build up to lay the granite on. by screwing the plywood build up down from the inside of the cabinet and in the event the granite cracks….........its a simply replacement. At 35 1/4”, if the granite counter breaks the whole island is toast…........again, the client is always right?

stanley 2…...........that is a door attached to a 16” double garbage can/container. By tapping the recessed kickplate the door opens like a drawer fully extends and has an “anti-slam” closure. A very nice piece of hardware and I highly recommend it.

thanks for the kind words

Excellent work. I would love to make some cabinets like that someday. You have to have a lot of room to work with to do that job. Anyway, fantastic job.

When I worked at the production cabinet shop I used to work for, I used to cringe when people wanted to paint my work and beat them up for a destressed look. Now that I run my own shop I realized that there is to much work out there to do and life is short to allow some interior decorator degrade my work. I don’t even stain unless there is a darn good reason. Just say’n I feel for you bud.
