Wood ID Quiz Box

I cut down a tree on my pond dam and cut this lumber from it, stickered and dried it, then built this box. Dimensions: 7 1/2×9 x 3 3/4”. Raised panel (done with the tablesaw) lid. Shipwright wooden hinge just under 1/4” thick. Walnut splines. Ipe lid lift. Oak ply bottom. Finished with rubbed on shellac.

Any guesses as to what wood this is?

Beech….probably cotton wood since it came from a pond dam in Oklahoma…..or willow

Picture #3 looks like QS sycamore. Willow possibly, but I haven’t seen cottonwood look like that.

Beautiful box however. Really nice job on the hinges.

That’s a darn nice looking box, Andy!

As far as the wood ID….
I’m no “wood expert”, but I’m pretty sure that is the best wood known to humankind!!!
It can go by many a different name, depending upon locale….
I don’t know the specific “scientific” species name, but in my neck of the woods (pun intended!), it is known as….
FREE WOOD!!!

Andy that is a nice looking and well crafted box .
As to the type of wood I would guess some type of willow or aspen .
whatever it is it is a very pleasing wood and shows nicely when finished the way you did ..

First of all, that’s a beautiful looking box. Another one well made. My guess would be Sycamore or river birch.

Awesome job on the box. Love the contrast of the wood, quality and craftsmanship.

My best guess would be Andywood...other than that I am not sure.
It is one fantastic looking box regardless of whatever kind of wood it is.

Nice work and pattern flow is visually pleasing. I’d like to know what trees grow around your pond or in the area.
