This old world dinning table and chairs. Has Marquetry of eight French style acanthus leafs around the top. And a center acanthus flower in bloom in the center of the top. Around the circumference on the top edge, theirs 32 carved acanthus leafs. It took 9 hours to carve each leaf. The table took me a little over 900 hours to make and finish.
The tapered cylinder drum base is hollow. The solid American black walnut base was 8/4 thick when glued up. When carving the leaves around the base, I carved off approxametly 3/4” of a inch. The top has 20 coats of clear polyurethane. I wet sanded the first 19 coats with 400 grit. Then after I sprayed the last coat. I sanded with 1200 grit to 2000 grit to 4000 grit. Then with a car buffer and a fine compound I buffed it until it looked like glass.
My brother Dan designed the table and chairs. I completed this piece 3 years ago.
This is me carving, it took 288 hours to carve the 32 leafs around the top edge.

Beautiful marquetry and carving! Your love of your work is truly showing. Very, very nice! It looks like it’s a pretty heavy piece to move around. Does the top separate from the base to move?

It ONLY too you 3 years to complete that?! It would take me a lifetime (that’s why I only do small projects) grin. This table of yours is really quite impressive. Intended or not, it has a strong manly look while still displaying elegance, a nice balance of the two.
