Maple and Mahogany Chessboard

I wanted to have a nice chessboard to play chess on, so I did the natural thing a woodworker would do—make one! I used two inch squares for the board which seem about right. I replaced the pieces shown in the photo with some higher quality tournament pieces.

If I was to do it again, I’d add some inlay around the board to dress it up a bit. I already have a bunch of the wood cut, so it seems like I’m going to make a second one whether I like it or not!

A fun and easy project and one you and your whole family can enjoy!

Nope, just maple and mahogany for the top. The base was using some popular I had lying around the shop.

That turned out great. A chess board is on my list of things to make but at the rate I’m going it may be quite a while.

Thanks for sharing.

This is a nice piece. You’ve done a fine job on it.

Thanks—a chessboard is definitely a project that keeps on giving. It’s great to get the family together and teach them how to play!

Great looking chessboard! Very well made and better than store bought ones. Great job!

Have your say...
