Taking the chrismas tree home. This box is my very first marquetry project. I don’t know why I had to choose the hardest thing to do, but that was my decission and I’m happy with it. There was a slight problem in sanding though. I actually made all the venneer for the christmas tree and it was thicker than the commercial veneer. During sanding I ended up with a dip that you can feel when you run your hand across the top. Needless to say I took it off the market because it wasn’t up to a good enough standard and I felt bad about the dip. This box is made out of walnut, has maple feet and beveled keyed miters, ebony pull, and various veneers including anigre, walnut burl, maple, poplar, alder, makore, and a couple I’m unfamilier with. (I ordered an assortment of exotics and I tried looking them up but was unsuccessfull) The inside of the box is open with velvet lining. Enjoy.

That is a gorgeous project, I’m curious to try marquetry but not sure I’m up to the challenge just yet.

Nice looking box. What type of finish did you use?

I used Minwax wipe on Poly for the finish. I typically use tung oil or just linseed oil because I like the natural look with no shine. This project deserved some sheen in my opinion.

The veneers and the box timber all go together really well.

Hey, there’s no problem with the box, just a dip in the road!
